This home page is an example of what you can do using eletrowidgets. It has two columns where we can drag and drop any WordPress Widget.

Eletrowidgets is supposed to work with any Widget. It will work with both pre 2.8 style widgets and the new pos 2.8 WordPress wigets API.

Please refer to the documentation to see how you can customize eletrowidgets.

Please note that this is not exactly a plug and play plugin. If you want to customize it, you will need to do some css.
